Take a virtual National Parks tour, from Glacier Bay in Alaska to Yellowstone in Wyoming, from Shenandoah in Virginia to Acadia in Maine, and end atop Katahdin, the terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
With record flooding damaging so much of Yellowstone during its 150th anniversary year, this special 2022 edition of the Acadia to Katahdin Virtual Race allows you to land on Google Street Views of such sites as Old Faithful. There'll even be a red pindrop embedded in the Yellowstone segment of the virtual race map with information about how you can donate to help the national park and surrounding communities.
Earn a medal (or two) with one of the following custom options: A ribbon featuring the 26 peaks of Acadia and the 3 peaks in Baxter State Park on the Appalachian Mountain Club's New England Four Thousand Footers List; an I LOVE Friends of Acadia or I LOVE Millinocket Memorial Library ribbon; or a rainbow or tie-dye ribbon.
All medals feature a glittery "Maine STRONG" logo, except for the one with the tie-dye ribbon, which features a moose and lobster and the phrase "Acadia to Katahdin." See a full-size image of medal and ribbon options at the top of the page here. Or you can scroll down to see a small image below.
Help raise funds for Acadia National Park and Millinocket, the gateway to Baxter State Park, home to Katahdin, Maine's highest mountain.
Start atop Cadillac, the first place to see the sun rise in the USA between Oct. 7 and March 6, and virtually climb all 26 peaks of Acadia on Mount Desert Island.
Then hop on over to Glacier Bay, where you can virtually hike the 6-mile Beach Trail and, if you're lucky, land on a scenic Google Street View. Next up is Yellowstone, where a 73-mile segment of the virtual race takes you along the scenic park loop road, among the world-famous geysers, and ends at Hayden Valley, where the buffalo roam.
And to round out the National Parks tour, head on over for a marathon-length distance in Shenandoah National Park, along Skyline Drive and the rock scramble to Old Rag and, if you're lucky, you may land on an embedded photo of our friend Winston showing us the rope on a recent climb up it.
Then three more marathon-length distances - in Stephen King territory from University of Maine, Orono to Bangor, including a short segment to Holden, and along the routes of the MDI Marathon (being run on Oct. 16) and Millinocket Marathon (being run on Dec. 3) - before heading for the final stretch up the 3 Baxter peaks on the AMC's New England Four Thousand Footer list and ending the 268.5-mile virtual race course atop Katahdin.
(This virtual race is not officially affiliated with any real-life races other than having previously been the virtual edition of the Maine Sea to Summit Series co-sponsored by acadiaonmymind.com and runmdi.org. And it is not officially affiliated with any national parks, other than helping to support Friends of Acadia, a partner of Acadia National Park.)
Wherever you are in the world, you can participate virtually by running or walking and logging your miles. Plus there is a dropdown calculator that allows you to convert minutes spent bicycling, swimming, cross-country skiing, doing calisthenics and other activities to a running-walking mileage equivalent.
Watch your avatar move along on a map from Acadia to Katahdin, criss-crossing the country, jumping from segment to segment. Get pop-up Google Street Views where available as you land on spots along the virtual race map. Invite family and friends to join no matter where they are - a perfect way to keep up in these still-pandemic times.
You until 11:59 PM EST on Dec. 31, 2022, to complete the segments. You can backdate miles to July 1, 2022, but log them one day at a time chronologically to get the maximum virtual race experience.
To ensure you cross the finish line and to take into account any mileage rounding issues, be sure to log a few extra tenths of a mile. And if you opted in for special finisher's medal(s), they will be mailed upon conclusion of the race.
Everyone is a winner, with final medals mailed soon after Dec. 31, whether you completed the segments by then or not. Mileage from this race and future races will count toward cumulative totals, allowing you to reach special milestones and recognition. Details of the Acadia to Katahdin Virtual Racing Hall of Fame to be announced at acadiaonmymind.com/virtual-races
At least 5% of gross proceeds from the race go to help support Acadia National Park via the nonprofit Friends of Acadia, and Millinocket via the nonprofit Millinocket Memorial Library.
We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:

We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:
- We rely on the honor system... you don't have to use a device to prove your miles -- a good map suffices.
- Please only backdate mileage to the start of this race, or July 1, 2022.
- No step counting, please use intentional miles.
- Walking or running miles are the default activity, with other activities like bicycling in the activity dropdown menu! (NOTE: miles on a racer’s personal log are for all races they are in, over all sports)
- Please attribute your mileage to the appropriate day -- don’t combine mileage from multiple days.
- Miles submitted after the race ends will not count toward race leaderboards.
