Asked Racery to see if they could adjust the algorithm so that people are more likely to get virtual views no matter where they land on the map. It used to grab a Google Street view within 50 feet of landing spot, so there were a lot of no-Google-view landings before the change. Now it will grab a virtual view within 1.5 miles, with the closest popping up. That's the long way of explaining why you appear to "land" twice at the same spot at base of fire tower - this must be the closest Google Street view within 1.5 miles of this landing spot, and your next Racery entry. Sorry couldn't make this long story short!

I like how the Racery algorithm is now grabbing Google Street Views from a wider area, to allow for more variety no matter where you land on the map. Never seen an image of Abol Beach before. The algorithm now searches for views within 1.5 miles of a landing spot, not just 50 feet.

Who decided that 2 hours of snowshoeing equals 10 miles? Every time I put in my 2 hours of snow shoeing I get a message from Racery . I did not make that rule but I'll tahe the 10 miles.

Anyone looking to submit their snowshoveling time? Or sleet shoveling? Nasty out there in Eastern Maine today.
      2
Sorry to hear the weather report for Eastern Maine! I've seen some folks in the past put down either moderate or vigorous physical activity for such snow "sport" - use your best judgment in terms of how you feel the minutes translate to mileage. Something like calisthenics, for instance, translates 10 minutes to 0.5 mile. Good luck with the shoveling @MaineJoe !
The day after it was just like the hard packed man made snow on ski slopes.

      Yeah!!
    • SparkyMoose Jan 8
Hi - I just noticed that when entering bike information, you need to note the time spent, not the miles covered. Is there a way to edit the entry or do I need to delete it and then re-enter the information correctly?
      1
Hi @SparkyMoose - you are able to delete an activity by clicking on the settings icon (looks like a flower or cog) to the right of the date of the daily log you are wanting to change. Once that is deleted, you would then re-enter it by choosing the date from the calendar, the activity from then drop-down menu, and then putting in the minutes or miles, depending upon the activity. It may take a day or two for the server to update, and your position on the virtual race map may change as a result of the re-entered mileage. But any streak that you may have should eventually show up again once the server updates. Sorry there's no shortcut that I'm aware of. Thanks for being part of the virtual race!

You’re the best. I’m not computer savvy at all so will get a friend to help! At least I have the sign up so can get in that way. Frustrating because it get some doozies of spam!!!
      1
Glad to know that at least the sign-up got through @jackrabbit67 . Will keep you posted once I hear back from Racery on their outreach to Microsoft / hotmail. Helps to have friends who are tech savvy!
    • jackrabbit67 Jan 7
      still no notices
      1
Hi @jackrabbit67 - see below reply to your Jan. 4 message that I put up this morning - it's a Microsoft / Hotmail issue, and Racery is trying to work with their developers to fix the issue. Couple of alternatives in the meanwhile to get notices, see below, if it ends up taking weeks for the technical fix to happen.
    • mdijim Jan 5
Having the same problem as jackrabbit67. Not getting notices of comments on my post
      8
Hi @mdijim - I'll email Racery about that as well - if you haven't tried checking the spam folder, try that. Generally, if I understand the Racery algorithm correctly, you get notification of comments on your posts only if that comment is made in a Racery log that you initiated. But if it's a comment to a comment, the surest way for it to show up as a notification to you is if the commenter types @mdijim - so it's a good habit, if you want to make sure someone gets notification of your comment - type the @ symbol and then the virtual racer's name.
      @AOMM Thanks.
Inspired by your Scrabble-playing @mdijim I decided to break open the game and play a few rounds with myself (as then I would always win!). "Few" and "jaw" are the words so far. What's the longest word you've ever put down? Back in high school or college years, I put down "stevedore."
@AOMM Offhand I cannot recall the longest word I put down. Eileen and i play one game nearly every day because it is fun and we have a theory that it keeps the mind sharp. We have modified the rules in two major ways: one is that we each play with 9 tiles supposedly to speed things up; and second, we each choose, without looking, 2 of the 4 highest value tiles, J, Q, X, and Z, on the theory that that levels the playing field a bit. Sometimes I wonder why we do not each get 2 S's and one blank. Sometimes I also wonder why we don't use a real dictionary like OED or Merriam-Webster and not the phony Scrabble dictionary. On the other hand, I do better than Eileen because I look up any weird combination of letters in the Scrabble dictionary and often find it to be legit. Eileen plays Scrabble with herself and it defintely improves her performance
Hi @mdijim - during the last virtual race you were in, apparently some of the email notifications were opted out of. Racery just reset everything, so you should start getting email notifications again. If there are any particular types of notifications you don't want to get anymore, there's an "opt out" link at the bottom of every type of email. And if after a period of time some of the emails aren't opened, you may get a notification asking if you would like to unsubscribe to those sorts of emails as they haven't been opened. Hope that helps!
@AOMM Yes, Racery does tend to flood one's inbox, but I look forward to comments by others. After a while I will decide which types from which I will unsubscribe (Churchill is supposed to have said, "Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.") Thank you for your help and advice.
I was an English major. But that was a long time ago @mdijim !
@AOMM Ha Ha, only a good writer confident in her command of the language would dare to start a sentence with a conjunction.
    • jackrabbit67 Jan 4
I am not receiving notices of postings or reminder to add my daily post. Right now I’m using the original entry form for this.
      4
Sounds like a similar issue as the last race @jackrabbit67 . I'll ask racery to reset on its end, as it might have gone to spam again. Not sure if there were any changes you were able to make on your end so as to whitelist the racery emails, but something worked last time, either on racery's end, your end or hotmail's end.
@AOMM thanks. I check my spam daily too just in case
Hi @jackrabbit67 - I emailed Racery to see what they can do on their end. Will let you know what I hear back from them. Not sure if you tried following up on the suggestion I mentioned in the last virtual race message board, as it was soon after I posted the below to you that it seemed to start working again: "Sometimes email systems make some change in their algorithm permanently blocking certain emails for whatever reason.... Not sure if there's a way to get Hotmail to permanently whitelist Racery emails. Here's a recent news article about changing Hotmail spam settings, in case this is helpful: https://smallbusiness.chron... "
Hi @jackrabbit67 - turns out hotmail / Microsoft is notorious for strict "blacklist" of certain types of emails, and Racery sometimes ends up tripped up by that. Racery is working with Microsoft's development team to try to get around that, but it could take days to weeks. In the meanwhile, Racery suggested the folllwing: "Add our domain to the safe sender list. This is a short process on her side. A Microsoft tutorial is located here: https://support.microsoft.c... She would add racery.com as the domain." If you would rather not wait until the issue is resolved with Microsoft, Racery suggested using a different email, if you have one, so the daily notifications can get through. They'd be happy to help you figure out how to substitute a new email, if you need. Otherwise, Racery will keep us posted when the issue with Microsoft / hotmail has been addressed. Also, another way to see comments or likes by others on your posts independent of email notification - in the upper right hand corner of the menu bar, to the left of your photo, is a bell icon. If you click on that, you will see a list of all the comments or likes. Thanks for your patience!

How can I enter my miles for 12/31 in the last challenge so I can keep my streak alive?
      12
I will put a special request in - how many miles, and doing what? It may take a few days for it to register. But once it does, the streak will be back in force - gotta keep the streak alive!
      @AOMM Thank you! I had 6.2 miles on 12/31.
Will put the request into the Racery IT team, and you should see the streak carry over after the server updates. Thanks for being part of the virtual race @Coastwalker !
@AOMM Sorry, but can you check on this again? My streak numbers are still just showing this year's workouts.
Hi @Coastwalker - I did email a second time about it yesterday, and it turns out it's not a simple automatic server update, and involves a little coding, and they're a little short-staffed, so Racery sends apologies. It should be showing up soon.
@AOMM Thanks for the update. I didn't realize it was so involved. I'll be more patient.
Hi @Coastwalker - apparently the easy part was, Racery was able to go in and put in the Dec. 31 mileage for the last virtual race for you: @Coastwalker" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://acadia.racery.com/r... But the hard part apparently is updating the computer code so that it then carries over to this virtual race - if it's as eye-numbing as I remember it from a computer coding class I once took years ago!
Let me try that link again: @Coastwalker" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://acadia.racery.com/r...
Sorry can't seem to make it a live link - but if you go to the last virtual race and check your log, you will see the Dec. 31 entry in there @Coastwalker
@AOMM Your link did work, and I can see my 12.31 entry. Thanks for getting things that far, so far.
@AOMM I hate to be a pain in the neck, but my streak is back to 9 days today, after seeming to have been corrected yesterday. Thanks.
Hi @Coastwalker - thanks for letting me know of the reversion - technology! I will let Racery know. Computer coding can be complicated, unfortunately.

Virtually race from the top of Cadillac and over the rest of the 26 peaks of Acadia National Park, then head north to the top of Katahdin in Baxter State Park.

And if that's not challenging enough, head west, virtual racer, and add on a marathon-length distance in Bryce Canyon National Park, before completing a second marathon distance up and over the 3 peaks of Baxter that are on the list of the Appalachian Mountain Club's New England Four Thoursand Footer list, ending atop Katahdin again.

Earn a customized medal (or two or more) - your choice of 3 medals, to be paired with one of 11 ribbon options. Plus you have the option to add a lobster patch or moose patch - or both!

See images of medal and ribbon options at the top of the page here. Or scroll down below to see a small image of some of the options.

Help raise funds for Acadia National Park and Millinocket, the gateway to Baxter State Park, home to Katahdin.

Start atop Cadillac, the first place to see the sun rise in the USA between Oct. 7 and March 6, and virtually climb all 26 peaks of Acadia on Mount Desert Island.

Then make a beeline straight north to Katahdin to summit Maine's highest mountain for the first time in this virtual race.

Then two more marathon-length distances - jump west to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah's red rock country, before heading for the final 26.2-mile stretch up the 3 Baxter peaks on the AMC's New England Four Thousand Footer list and ending the 261.5-mile virtual race course atop Katahdin a second and final time.

(This virtual race is not officially affiliated with any real-life races other than having previously been the virtual edition of the Maine Sea to Summit Series co-sponsored by acadiaonmymind.com and runmdi.org. And it is not officially affiliated with any national parks, other than helping to support Friends of Acadia, a partner of Acadia National Park.)

Wherever you are in the world, you can participate virtually by running or walking and logging your miles. Plus there is a dropdown calculator that allows you to convert minutes spent bicycling, swimming, cross-country skiing, doing calisthenics and other activities to a running-walking mileage equivalent.

Watch your avatar move along on a map from Acadia to Katahdin, criss-crossing the country, jumping from segment to segment. Get pop-up Google Street Views where available as you land on spots along the virtual race map. Invite family and friends to join no matter where they are - a perfect way to keep up in these still-pandemic times.

You until 11:59 PM EST on June 30, 2023, to complete the segments. You can backdate miles to January 1, 2023, but log them one day at a time chronologically to get the maximum virtual race experience.

To ensure you cross the finish line and to take into account any mileage rounding issues, be sure to log a few extra tenths of a mile. And if you opted in for special finisher's medal(s), they will be mailed upon conclusion of the race.

Everyone is a winner, with final medals mailed soon after June 30, whether you completed the segments by then or not. Mileage from this race and future races will count toward cumulative totals, allowing you to reach special milestones and recognition. Details of the Acadia to Katahdin Virtual Racing Hall of Fame to be announced at acadiaonmymind.com/virtual-races

At least 5% of gross proceeds from the race go to help support Acadia National Park via the nonprofit Friends of Acadia, and Millinocket via the nonprofit Millinocket Memorial Library.

We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:

    • We rely on the honor system... you don't have to use a device to prove your miles -- a good map suffices.

    • Please only backdate mileage to the start of this race, or Jan. 1, 2023.

    • No step counting, please use intentional miles.

    • Walking or running miles are the default activity, with other activities like bicycling in the activity dropdown menu! (NOTE: miles on a racer’s personal log are for all races they are in, over all sports)

    • Please attribute your mileage to the appropriate day -- don’t combine mileage from multiple days.

    • Miles submitted after the race ends will not count toward race leaderboards.
