- From: Acadia
- To: Katahdin
- Start date: January 1, 2024
- End date: June 30, 2024
- 0:00
- 23:59
- Route distance: 223.1 miles
- Total logged: 23,322.9 miles
Virtually race from the top of Cadillac and over the rest of the 26 peaks of Acadia National Park. Head west to tour Mt. Washington State Park in NH, then Glacier, Bryce and Haleakala National Parks.
Circle back east to Hampton National Historic Site, where the community is working to build a Freedom Trail to connect the former plantation to other significant sites in the area, telling the story of the unequal relationship between two parts of Towson, MD, one black, one white, dating from the 18th century.
Then come on back to Maine, virtually run the Millinocket Marathon & Half, tour Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and climb the 3 peaks of Baxter State Park that make the cut of the Appalachian Mountain Club's New England Four Thousand Footers list. Finish atop Katahdin, the state's highest peak.
Earn a customized medal (or two+) - your choice of 3 medals, to be paired with one of 11 ribbon options. Plus you have the option to add a lobster or moose patch - or both!
And for the first time with this series of virtual races, you have the option to order special coasters featuring the 26 peaks of Acadia, the 3 peaks of Baxter on AMC's NE Four Thousand Footer list or the work of Maine artist SKong. Also available: These same images in the form of 4"x4" magnets.
See medal and ribbon options, coasters and magnets at the top of the page here. Or scroll down to see thumbnail photos.
Help raise funds for Acadia National Park and Millinocket, the gateway to Katahdin, as well as for the non-profit National Parks Traveler, whose motto is "Essential Coverage for Essential Places."
Start atop Cadillac, the first place to see the sun rise in the USA between Oct. 7 and March 6, and virtually climb all 26 peaks of Acadia on Mount Desert Island in the first 59 miles of this virtual race.
Then summit Mt. Washington, the Northeast's highest peak and "home of the world's worst weather," by virtually racing up the auto road, then descending along the Cog Railway.
Jump over to Glacier National Park in Montana for the virtual race's next 47-mile segment, along the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Hop over to Bryce in Utah as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of its status as a National Park in 2024, and do a marathon-length through its spectacular red-rock country.
Virtually fly over to Haleakala National Park on Maui and do a half-marathon distance up the picturesque park road, to the Haleakala Observatory that isn't open to the general public in real life.
Head east to virtually visit the proposed Freedom Trail in Towson, MD, and the Hampton National Historic Site.
Return to Maine for the Millinocket Marathon & Half, a visit to Katahdin Woods and Waters, and a final marathon-length distance over the 3 peaks of Baxter that are 4000 feet or higher, finishing the 223.1-mile virtual race atop Katahdin.
(This virtual race is not officially affiliated with any real-life races other than having previously been the virtual edition of the Maine Sea to Summit Series co-sponsored by acadiaonmymind.com and runmdi.org. And it is not officially affiliated with any national parks, other than helping to support Friends of Acadia, a partner of Acadia National Park, and not associated with Katahdwin Woods and Waters, AMC, Baxter State Park or Mt. Washington State Park.)
Wherever you are in the world, you can participate virtually by running or walking and logging your miles. Plus there is a dropdown calculator that allows you to convert minutes spent bicycling, swimming, cross-country skiing, doing calisthenics and other activities to a running-walking mileage equivalent.
Watch your avatar move along on a map from Acadia to Katahdin, criss-crossing the country, jumping from segment to segment. Get pop-up Google Street Views where available as you land on spots along the virtual race map. Click on red pindrops near where you land on the map to find out fun facts. Invite family and friends to join no matter where they are - a perfect way to keep up and explore America's parks, virtually.
You have until 11:59 PM EST on June 30, 2024, to complete the segments. You can backdate miles to Jan. 1, 2024, but log them one day at a time chronologically to get the maximum virtual race experience.
To ensure you cross the finish line and to take into account any mileage rounding issues, be sure to log a few extra tenths of a mile. And if you opted in for special finisher's medal(s), coasters or magnets, they will be mailed upon conclusion of the race.
Everyone is a winner, with medals, coasters and magnets mailed soon after June 30, whether you completed the segments by then or not. Mileage from this race and future races will count toward cumulative totals, allowing you to reach special milestones and recognition. Details of the Acadia to Katahdin Virtual Racing Hall of Fame to be announced at acadiaonmymind.com/virtual-races
At least 5% of gross proceeds from the race go to help support Acadia National Park via the nonprofit Friends of Acadia, Millinocket via the nonprofit Millinocket Memorial Library, and National Parks Traveler.
We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:

We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:
- We rely on the honor system... you don't have to use a device to prove your miles -- a good map suffices.
- Please only backdate mileage to the start of this race, or Jan. 1, 2024.
- No step counting, please use intentional miles.
- Walking or running miles are the default activity, with other activities like bicycling in the activity dropdown menu! (NOTE: miles on a racer’s personal log are for all races they are in, over all sports)
- Please attribute your mileage to the appropriate day -- don’t combine mileage from multiple days.
- Miles submitted after the race ends will not count toward race leaderboards.
